Benefits of a Vacation

The sunshine warmed my body as the hot, humid air left a sticky film on my skin. With my eyes closed, I was nearly drifting to sleep as the noises around me began to mesh together. It was the sound of ice cubes clinking against glass that caught my attention. I slowly opened my eyes and squinted out from under my sunglasses. My mouth began to water as a fresh, cold tropical drink was delivered to me. After offering a wide smile and a much deserved tip, I lifted the tall glass to my mouth. My fingertips grazed the small paper umbrella, pushing it out of the way. I licked my lips anxiously as condensation from the glass dripped onto my leg. My dry mouth welcomed the icy drink and even the sudden head pain could not stop me from drinking from the colorful straw.

My drink was a temporary relief from the heat but within minutes, I again became aware of the humidity of the day and the stickiness it left on my skin. In one swift motion, I stood up from the lounge chair, tossed my glasses on the seat and jumped into the sparkling pool. At first the temperature of the water shocked my body, causing me to take a deep breathe in but as I released it, “Ahhhhh.” The water was perfect. I leaned back and floated, taking in the comforting coolness of the water and the intoxicating sunshine of the day. I bounced nearly weightlessly in the water over to my group of friends. I smiled once again as I realized that one of them had been kind enough to order me another drink from the swim up bar. I had five days in which my primary responsibilities were to remember to apply sunscreen and be ready for my dinner reservation. Now this was the vacation that I was in need of.

Whether you prefer a beach destination or the quiet isolation of a cabin in the woods, one thing is consistent: Everyone can benefit from a vacation. When I returned home from mine, I felt relaxed, rejuvenated, and energized. My vacation allowed me to indulge in some much needed time with my husband and enjoy the company of wonderful friends. The change of scenery cleared my mind and I could never grow tired of hearing the sound of waves crashing on a sandy shore. With summer’s end just around the corner, do yourself a favor and take a break, enjoy a vacation and return with an energized attitude. Your memories will last a lifetime.
