Dr. Mullen shares arthritis prevention tips and explains why Banner Baywood Medical Center is a special facility. Dr. Mullen is an orthopedic surgeon at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.

Dr. Mullen:
Not every woman who has some arthritis has to have a joint replacement. Most of my patients want to know about prevention.

They want to know how they can avoid having surgeries. There’s a number of ways to try to do that.

The most obvious ways are, of course, to maintain a healthy diet, don’t smoke and use low-impact aerobic exercise.

One of the great things about the Banner Baywood Medical Center is that they take a proactive approach to patient care.

People who are going to have their joint replaced, whether it’s their knee, their hip or their shoulder, they are invited to come to a pre-surgical class.

There’s doctors, there’s nurses, there’s administrators there. There’s physical therapist, social workers – a whole team.

And a lot of that team is the same group of people that they are going to see in the hospital.

They get a complete overview of anything that they may anticipate happening and what it does is it puts patients at ease. The more they know about the process before it happens the easier it is.
