Weight Loss: Too Fat or Too Thin

Marilyn Monroe was a size 12, and I too have heard the argument that a 12 was really an 8 due to size differential in the 50s and 60s, but the argument is flawed.

My mother was a size 10 and plump and the label on her clothing was right; there was no differential and it’s all bull. Rita Hayworth was no small cookie either and men adored her. The list of women that were healthy in the 50s is a long one with most in sizes 10, 12, and some even a 14, and men loved them. I have, as an adult, been up and down the weight scale, being on the too small list, too often. After age 50, my weight flopped to the larger side with a stomach that is flabby, and a backside that has it’s own zip code. My husband, the sweet blind man, thinks I’m beautiful and I refuse to take him to the optometrist. Problem solved.

Gaining weight can and often does, take a toll on the sex drive and the heart. It’s not healthy and to those of us who are over-weight it’s anything but sexy. Loosing too much weight can be hazardous as well, with your body not getting the proper amounts of protein, and carbohydrates that it needs to function properly. Women that go down the bulimia-anorexia trail end up in dire straits due to the purging and lack of needed nourishment that is a constant in their diets. The heart, liver, and kidneys—all vital organs—become damaged due to excessive weight loss. On the other end of the spectrum, too much weight can lead to heart, liver, and kidney damage with the added worry of diabetes. There is a perfect weight, but females are bent on self-destruction while finding it, and rarely is it the perfect weight because we see bumps and bulges that to us are unappealing regardless of our size.

If 20 pounds is too much, and 15 pounds too little, what is the answer to when you feel the sexist? It’s when your loveble, lying, adoring, smart husband tells you how beautiful you are too him. If the doctor says you need to lose a few pounds, then he is not your husband and is not likely sight-impaired, so lose the few pounds. If your husband is telling you to lose a few pounds, tell him he’s not the man you married either. Let him know you are happy with yourself, and then when the lights go out be the person that you know you are on the inside.

There really is an overwhelming amount of pressure in the media on women about getting thin. And some vulnerable women believe the images are the norm and struggle to get to the unhealthy size zero. But as you said it is about being at a healthy weight and learning to be comfortable with our body

BBC Documentary on Rapid Weight Loss Shows Health Issues
In the BBC America documentary film, called "Super Skinny Me," two average-size British journalists agreed to a radical experiment -- drop five dress sizes in just five weeks. The goal was to show the drastic and sometimes deadly lengths women will go to just to be thin.
Burke, 29, weighed 129 pounds, and had never before tried to lose weight. She turned to magazines for the latest fad diets. One week she drank only protein shakes, another week she ate no carbs.
Weighing in at just under 144 pounds, 37-year-old Spicer said she wanted to understand why women go to such extremes to lose weight.
Spicer followed a radical diet of lemonade with maple syrup and cayenne pepper. She stayed away from solid foods and ran for an hour a day.
Burke, who began working out with a trainer two hours a day, tried another extreme weight loss tactic.
"Apparently if you swim in freezing cold water it speeds up your metabolism," she said
In just one week, though, both women saw dramatic results. But the experiment began to take a drastic physical toll.
Burke had "pins and needles sensation" while lying in bed and how her fingernails turned blue and said she became less productive at work and stopped spending time with her boyfriend.
Spicer, too, spiraled downward. A dinner out with friends led to bingeing. And as she became more obsessed with weight loss, Spicer's binges gave way to purging. Her doctor tells her she will become bulimic if she continues that way and was advised to drop out of the experiment a week early. She lost 17 pounds, going from a healthy size 12 to a scary size 6.
Burke lost 14 pounds over five weeks but said losing that much weight so quickly "sent me into depression really, and I've never been like that before, ever!"
Both women have sworn off dieting and obsessive exercise. Spicer is still working toward finding a healthy balance, and Burke is back to eating everything in moderation.
Asked if she would take part in the weight loss experiment again, Burke said, "No, never! I would never recommend extreme diets again.''

This is so true! We have unrealistic views of what a healthy weight is. Plus diets don't work in the long term to keep the weight off. To permanently achieve an ideal weight, you need to pay attention to your brain more than your stomach.
