Abnormal period or is early miscarriage a possibility?

Hi, my cycle is always pretty regular, but this month I had cramps and started spotting a week before my period was due. I spotted for 6 days, had strange appetite/ mild nausea a couple of the days, and some other slightly odd things. Then yesterday I got my period (a day early) and it has been heavier than usual with clots, and at least a couple of them were very large. At one point today my period was heavier than on the first day, which is unusual. This has been a very abnormal cycle for me, nothing like I've experienced before. Is it likely just a strange cycle, or is early miscarriage a possibility? I am 26 and have never been pregnant before. I almost feel like taking a pregnancy test just in case/ so I can rule it out, but would it show up if I was?

Hi DS and welcome to EmpowHER.

Have you been under a lot of stress recently? What you describe sounds like an abnormal period, which is fairly common for women your age. Stress impacts our hormone levels and that, in turn, can impact our periods.

You don't seem to have the symptoms of a miscarriage. They include some or all of the following: Vaginal bleeding,Pink or brown discharge,Cramping, Discharge of the products of conception (fetus, placenta, and surrounding membranes),Fever.

Since you had your period it is not likely that you are pregnant. If you continue to have abnormal cycles it would be best to see your healthcare provider.

Hope that helps,

Pam

Update: After 2 days of heavy bleeding, today (the 3rd day) it has almost stopped. I also had pains different from cramps in my lower abdomen this morning. I never even get cramps after the 2nd day. This is all extremely unusual for me. Should I just wait and see if cycles continue to be abnormal, or is there anything else I should do?

Guide (reply to DS)

Hi DS - the pains in your lower abdomen are concerning. Unusual pain can be an indicator of an underlying medical condition. You know your body better than anyone else, and had already experienced multiple changes that were concerning before these new types of pains developed. It would be in your best interests to see your medical professional as soon as you can. It will likely take a physical exam and some diagnostic tests to determine if you have an underlying health condition that is showing up in these symptoms, or if you are healthy. It's better to get solid answers than to continue worrying. I don't mean to frighten you, but I think you need more information and more peace of mind. Let me know what you learn, I wish all the best for you. Pam

Thanks for your reply. I've had stress but not more than in the last several months. When I was spotting it was pink and brown, and I had cramps a week before my period and cramping yesterday. I thought it was just my period starting and an abnormal cycle but did some reading, and with all the odd things together wondered if very early miscarriage could be a possibility.
