Q:

Is Breast Really Best?

For those women out there who may wonder if this is a myth or not, here is a recent report of the benefits of breastfeeding not for the baby but for the mother.

According to a study in the May issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, mothers-to-be may want to consider breasting to protect their own health. The study showed that women who breast-feed for longer than one year seem to be 10 to 15 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease after menopause than women who don't breast-feed.

The new findings should help tip the scale for women who are considering breast-feeding as well as encourage those who already are breast-feeding to do so for longer periods of time. "Heart disease is the leading killer of U.S. women," Dr Eleanor Schwartz lead study author an assistant professor of medicine, epidemiology, obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research on Health Care in Pennsylvania.

I just would like to know why is there such a hateful propaganda against mothers who want to breastfeed? Kristin, your comment shows a denial of who you are as a female. So what if the American Academy of Pediatrics funded this study? What is your gripe? If this site is to succeed it must promote two sided-opinions and stop trying to bring the liberal agenda each time a woman or women desire to share nurturing experiences about using fully the biological equipment they were designed with by higher power.

Anon, so what exactly is the propaganda against mothers who breastfeed? I'd really like to know because this is a totally new one on me. And who are you to judge me? Denial of who I am as a female?!? Believe me, I know who I am as a female. And yes, I've used my "biological equipment." I've had four babies and breastfed two of them, and I was very happy to do so. When I chose not to breastfeed, I was totally happy with that decision as well.

My gripe about this whole issue is that we moms literally have the "breast is best" propaganda slogan shoved down our throats so far that it's nearly impossible for our voices to be heard. There are so many moms out there who are unable to breastfeed for a medical or whatever reason and never have a choice, and as a result with this latest trend in breastfeeding being deemed "best," they are overwhelmed with guilt. And I'm sick of it. Someone has to speak out. Breast is NOT best. What we choose to provide for our babies IS best -- whether breast or formula. We have the choice. We are the moms. And we know best.

This has nothing to do whatsoever with liberalism ... this is about moms making a choice on how to feed their babies and not being criticized for whatever choice they make.

Are you a mom, by the way?

I think that you've already proven, by virtue of your freely allowed comment, that we DO allow opposing opinions on this site. We certainly are not perpetuating "hateful propaganda" of any sort.

Everyone has a right to an opinion, and we expect that everyone would respect that right.

Well, if you actually read the study, you'll find that it was simply based on data taken from the WHI study, which we all know was seriously flawed anyway. The 139,681 women who took part in the WHI study were all postmenopausal, and had lived 35+ years of their lives since breastfeeding. (Some of them may not even have been able to remember how long they breastfed.) Talk about a huge number of factors involved in their health within those 35+ years that they lived their lives.... Why these researchers feel there's a direct correlation to breastfeeding with the women's cardiovascular health is beyond me.... Gee, I wonder who funded this study. American Academy of Pediatrics, anyone??

This is simply more of the same breastfeeding "breast is best" propaganda we moms are fed all the time. Ugh.
