My 4 year old son broke his arm...I seen the xray and in his arm below his elbow there were 2 bones and he broke one...The doctor put a cast on it for about 5 weeks it was removed yesterday and he now has a curve to his arm and i again seen the xray and one bone is straight and the other healed like an arrow...he also has a lump...the doctor told me that as he grows it will straighten but it can take years, he also told me my other two options were surgically straighten it or to rebreak it...He also told me that there should be no long term effects...I am very concerned about this and would like a second opinion I would also like to know if tis is the doctors fault for not aligning the bone properly before putting on the case...Please get back to me as I need answers thanks...

Hi Anon - Thanks for the update on your son, and for letting us know why you've made the decisions you've made. It's good to k now that he has full movement and is out of pain, but I agree that it's sad that both you and he have been through all this only to end up with his arm still curved.
When I was a little girl one of my fingers was hit hard with a volleyball. The doctors gave my parents a choice of having it heal in a crooked manner, or breaking the bone and having surgery/recovery to repair it. They decided not to put me through the trauma of surgery and I've had a curved pinky on my right hand pretty much my entire life. It has never hurt, and I only remember that it actually is that way every once in a while, like right now. I hope your son also grows up with no problems and appreciates that you spared him additional trauma.

Sorry I haven't relayed the updates on my grand daughter. Broke her arm in October 2009, her arm is still curved and she does not have total mobility in her elbow and also her wrist. Third opinion doctor ran some tests and he feels like she has a form of osteogensis imperfecta. She goes weekly and has been since February to a therapist. Seems to have helped with her mobility alittle not a great amount. We are still very concerned. Think of her in your prayers.
July 16, 2010 - 9:49amAs far as sports (with the doctor's blessing) she enjoyed a wonderful winning summer of softball. We were all very anxious, but she did wonderful. Although the doctors recommedation right now is for her to not play fast pitch next year. We'll see when the time arrives.
They have since moved into a new house with a pool, and she swims everyday, therapist says very good therapy for her. She is still enjoying her dance classes and was also chosen to joy the competition dance team. During the beginning of her recitals she was alittle self conscious of her arm, but with all the family support, she trooped throught it with flying colors. For any of you with the issue of broken arms and them not looking right, I can totally sympathize with you. Unless something changes, the doctor feels that we should not go through the re-breaking and re-setting of her arm for fear of it not healing. We just pray that the mobility will increase and the curve will become less noticeable.

My daughter is 5 1/2 years old. She also broke both bones in her left arm below the elbow. The doctor reset her arm in the emergency room and casted her right away. It's been 2 weeks and her xrays are also showing one bone aligned and the other one is way off. Her orthopaedic doctor states that she will heal with no problem and will not have a curve in her arm. As concerned parents we are going to see another doctor to make sure that he is being upfront with us. I understand that not every child heals the same but the more I inquire online the more I see that maybe I should get a second opinion before it's too late.

Just an update: Nana3 did respond to me, and we've been in contact regarding her granddaughter's broken arm. I hope Nana3 will post the results (and our conversation, so others can benefit from the information).
We'll keep you posted. Thanks!

To Mother with 4 yr. old with broken arm. My granddaughter broke her left arm when she was about 4-1/2 below the elbow and she broke both bones. When all was said and done, she has some movement problems and a knot on the outside of her arm. To make a long story short 5 days ago she was practicing basketball and fell and now has broken 1 of the bones again, she's 8 now. The doctor at the emergency room was concerned about the x-ray, because it looks like her bone is now "s" shaped. Unfortunately the only doctor who could see her on Friday was the same doctor from the 1st time. He recasted her arm and says all will be alright, my daughter is so upset, she is trying to get her in somewhere for a 2nd opinion and has tryed all day and no one will see her because she already has a cast on. We're not sure where to turn to now. So please if you are worried, try to get his arm looked at again. We voiced our worries, all through the 1st break and could not get anywhere. If you know anything that would help us, sure would appreicate it.

Nana3,
I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is wanting a second opinion for her 8 year old daughter, and no one will see her.
Could you tell us where your daughter lives, and we can see if there are any doctors we can find? (you can also send me a private message, if you prefer).

They live in Jonesboro Arkansas. Update since last posting she was told by the doctor's office who is seeing my granddaughter that it's against the law for anyone else to see her with the cast already on. They said she should have seen someone else before the cast was put on her arm. Problem with that is no other office was open on a Friday to see a child. Thanks Nana
