Hi Im 15 years old and I started my period last year in June. When I first started my period it was red but as time when on my period blood as suddenly turned brown all the way through and only on some occasions the blood is slightly red. So I was wondering if it is normal at this age to have periods that are brown period blood.

Guide

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and I am glad to reached out to us with your concern.

A small quantity of brown blood towards the end of a menstrual period is not abnormal and is just degraded blood or “old blood” being expelled.

However, if the entire menstrual flow is brown, you must be evaluated by your doctor. Is your mother aware of this change?

Ask her to call your pediatrician's office and report this. You may need to schedule an appointment to be seen. Better to check this out now rather than wait. It may be nothing at all, but only your doctor can determine that.

Please keep in touch once you have seen your doctor.

Regards,
Maryann
