Q:

Can inserting yogurt help with BV

I read on several different sites that eating and inserting plain yogurt into your virgina can help cure BV. Is this true and how safe is that because I went the doctor and got antibiotics and they didn't help. I would like to try any natural remedy to help me with BV. I tired inserting a small amount of yogurt and today I'm on my period, could the yogurt have induced it?

Dear Anon,

Yogurt can help but it isn't just ANY flavor yogurt from your fridge. It must be plain yogurt and you would have to eat it and/or apply it directly for at least one week, at bedtime. Your best bet is to go back to the doctor that prescribed the antibiotics and explain that you are still having symptoms. Sometimes we need more than one round of antibiotics (because some bacteria are more resistant to the antibiotic).

I really wouldn't recommend experimenting with other home remedies, especially now that you've had it for a while seeing as you could possibly make it worse. You can definitely mention supplementing the antibiotics with the plain, unpasteurized yogurt to your doctor to get his or her two cents.

Also, to answer your other question--the yogurt did not induce your period.

Good Luck!
