Can my headphones cause hearing problems?

I listen to music on my computer or iPod a lot with headphones. Even though I love listening to music, I'm afraid the headphones may cause hearing loss or hearing problems. How do I know when my headphone volume is too loud? Can use headphones cause hearing loss or hearing problems?

Hi Lauren, Thank you for your question and welcome to Empowher. Hearing loss is common as we age but there are things that can reduce how fast hearing loss occurs. Here is an article that explains the different hearing loss issues https://www.empowher.com/media/reference/hearing-loss-1. Hearing loss IS known to be caused by loud noises therefore, I would try and keep your headphones to a minimum level to avoid loud noises throughout your day. If you ever hear ringing in your ears, this is often a tell all sign that you are using a louder then normal level. You should also get a check up from an Audiologist to check what your current hearing levels are. I hope this helps. MissieJune 28, 2014 - 6:25am
