Can a young child have bipolar disorder and what signs should I look for?

A friend of mine says his son has been diagnosed as bipolar. I thought that condition couldn't be diagnosed until later in life. What would the symptoms be in a young (8 year old) child? Is there anything that can be done to help them?

Hi Lauren,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Diagnosing a young child with Bipolar can be difficult and many doctors don't believe this conditions can be diagnosed until they are an older teenager or young adults. Symptoms can include unpredictable mood swings, anger, depression and anxiety. The most effectivetreatment is through psychotherapy and medication together.  Hope this was helped?
