Q:

Had Period Last Month, Negative Tests, Week Late - Possible?

This is my situation:

I last got my period on December 10th. It was normal, I had it for a couple of days (believe it was at least 5, probably 6 days), went through tampons. The month prior to getting the period, I had sex once (and there's a chance it was within the week after finishing my second to last period) + it was protected and nothing went wrong (not on birth control though). I'm now a week late this month - took a test two days ago (negative) and this morning (negative). No symptoms whatsoever, no soreness/discharge/fatigue, etc. But I am generally very regular. Usually every 28/29 days (sometimes the range is 28-32). I'm in my mid-twenties.

I know that being pregnant is highly unlikely on these facts. It also has to be at least 5-6 weeks from "possible conception." But any thoughts? I'd like some peace of mind before I delay my period further or miss it completely due to stress.

I am - thanks for responding. I think the only reason I freaked out is because I had finals last month and somehow worried that I didn't notice something different about my period (i.e. that it wasn't really a period) b/c I was so engrossed in studying (though also very stressed).

But like you said, a month later, a test would certainly show HCG levels by now and all three tests said no immediately.

I think I'm also now worrying that there's something wrong health-wise b/c I've always been very regular and this is the first time I will have skipped a period. I'll just relax and hopefully it will come - but if it doesn't come next month, at what point would you go to a doctor?

You can call your Gynecologist at any time, to see what his/her protocol is for seeing women who have missed a period. Typically, your doctor will not need to see you until you have missed either two or more periods and/or if you have any unusual or different symptoms (such as pain).

The medical term for "loss of period" is called "amenorrhea", and does not actually apply until women have missed three or more periods in-a-row...missing a period (or even two!) really is that common, and can be related to a underlying health condition, but more often, is related to a recent illness, new medication or stress.

Dear Anon,

If you have not had sex since that one time before December 10th-- you are not pregnant. By now, a urine pregnancy test would detect the hcg hormone and would give you a positive pregnancy test.

Stress is a HUGE factor in a woman's period being late even when you are very regular. It happens, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you or that you are pregnant. Hope you're feeling more at peace now that you have taken a third pregnancy test and it is also negative.

Took the other test from the pack on the 15th, negative. But still no period.

Also I have no signs of pregnancy (also, I guess no period symptoms either, since they do overlap). I feel completely normal - breasts aren't swollen/tender, no sickness, dry, don't feel bloated, body temperature is normal, etc.

No sex whatsoever since the last period. So, just the one time in the month before Dec. 10. And I think I would have freaked out last month if my period hadn't been normal last month. I know I had it for at the very least 4-5 days, meaning I went through more than 1 tampon.

Generally, I'm a 28/29 day girl. But over the years my cycle has been ranging from 28-32. Only one time I stressed so much, I got it on day 36.

We're very, very careful. Use protection, pull out, and check.

So, I feel like at this rate - I'd have to be at least at 5 weeks past possible conception and most likely 7 weeks. I feel like a test would pick up those hormones at this point, and today's test said negative.

Thank you! Just trying to put my mind at ease so I don't completely skip this month from stress.

Have you had unprotected sex AFTER your last menstrual period?

When you have a menstrual period, it means you are not pregnant from that prior cycle.

If you have not had sex after your last period, then your period may just be "late" (although unless you are perfectly on the most "regular" cycle every time, it probably isn't really "late", since you just had one Dec. 10th, and today is only Jan 14th).

How long are your cycles, typically? (You can't use the date-of-the-month very accurately, seeing as each month is different in length of days, so eventually your period will fall on different dates). To know the length of your cycle, count the first day of your period as "day 1". Then, the day of your next subsequent period (first day of bleeding) is again "Day 1". The days in between are known as the length of your cycle, and normal ranges are between 21-35 days.

Does this help?
