I am thinking of having this done, but reading this has really had me thinking of why do this, go through more pain just to see if it works?? I'm seriously thinking of just having the partial hysterectomy. I am so tired of planning my life around my periods. I am 36 yrs old and having be living with painful periods since the day i have started. Every female in my family is basically the same, especially my twin. Its tiring, frustrating! I have not read anything positive about this procedure :( I just want a life without pain!

My doctor refused to do the partial hysterectomy until we tried a "less invasive" method first. In fact, the insurance company would not approve a partial hysterectomy first. I'm hoping I can have it done when I go into surgery on January 4th for a bladder tuck.

I had Her Option on 6/3/10. My periods were 9 days + and were heavy, heavy, heavy. I also would have a period anywhere from 2-6 weeks apart. After Her Option, I had the watery discharge for 3 weeks and also had an infection from it. I was on antibiotics, but they didn't work, so got some different ones and they worked. In September, I had my first period since Her Option and it was the worst cramping I've ever had. Still way heavy bleeding, but only lasted 5 days. Now exactly one month later, I'm bleeding again. It's still very heavy and the cramping is terrible! On January 4th I'm having a bladder tuck surgery. During that surgery my doc is going to do a hysteroscopy, a DNC and decide right then and there if she's going to do a heat ablation or a partial hysterectomy. I'm voting for the partial hysterectomy, especially since every woman in my family has had to have one because nothing else worked for them. Seems like everything they have (uterine problems, thyroid disorder) I also have.

I just had the procedure October 22, 2010 and I have mixed feelings. I don't have the heavy bleeding that some women experienced but I do have a lot of the cramping and lower back/rt hip pain. I also was quite loopy for a couple of days from the combo of medication they gave me for the procedure (xanax, vicodin, motrin, and a Tordol shot). I find it hard to believe that women are able to return to normal activities the next day. I am glad I took an extra day off from work to recover. I still have the lite watery discharge but I have not had a period yet so I am not sure of the results. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi Slick Nick,
October 25, 2010 - 12:59pmThank you for your comment and for finding EmpowHER.
What were your symptoms/condition leading up to deciding to have the procedure done?
Have you had trouble with medication in the past? Did the doctor tell you how you would feel following the procedure?
I hope you continue to get better. Please let us know how you are doing going forward, how long it takes for you to start bleeding, and how long that lasts. We're interested to learn how happy you are with the results.

After I had my last child via emergency c-section/ tubal ligation/large ovarian cyst all at the SAME time in 2008, I began to have very heavy periods when my cycle returned after breast feeding. I put up with it for 8 or 9 months hoping my body would adjust to normal over time and it didn't. At my 2009 annual pelvic exam I discussed this with my doctor and suggested putting me back on Birth Control. Which worked great but at the age of 38, I didn't want to be on the pill until menopause and I am NOT having anymore kids so she suggested the HerOption procedure. The paperwork and the website made it sound so easy and the doctor did not mention the side effects of the Xanax. I have taken Vicodin before and never had a problem. I literally was walking into walls :-). Today I am only taking the Motrin and 1/2 of a Vicodin as needed. Still having the cramping in waves but the "loopyness" of the combo of meds has worn off. I am a little discouraged since a lot of the ladies are not happy with the results or it seems to take a long time to reach success. My doctor still has me on the pill(Kariva) for now and I see her in three weeks for follow up. I am afraid I may end up having a hysterectomy after all...

I had the procedure done this morning. It wasn't at all like I thought it would be in the office. I received an injection and some medication to make me drowsy/relaxed. The procedure was fairly simple and lasted maybe 30 minutes. So far, I am about 5 hours out and I have been bleeding fairly heavy and very crampy. I was prescribed Vicodin, which I may end up taking. Other than that, I have just been laying around and sleeping all day to allow my body to kind of adjust. I have to make a follow up for the 6 month mark, so I guess time will tell if it was worth everyone's time/ money.

Anon - It will be interesting to see if the "promises" that were made to you come true, and I hope you let us know.
If you decide you'd like to have scientific information on fibroids here are some resources for you:
From EmpowHER: https://www.empowher.com/condition/uterine-fibroids, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has a page on them: http://www.acog.org/publications/patient_education/bp074.cfm. In addition, the National Institutes of Health has a good educational page: http://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/Uterine_Fibroids.cfm.
