I am a 50 year old smoker of 35 years. I have for a very long time had whats been described as a smokers cough and wheeze. Over the past week I have been having pain in my right shoulder (blade) and pins and needles/numbness in my right arm and hand. Slight shortness of breath. Are these signs of the dreaded "C". Has anyone else had any of these symtoms?

Lee,

I'm so glad I could be of some help to you. It does sound like what's going on with you might be spine-related. Have you made that appointment yet? Have you ever had physical therapy to help with your spine issues?

And you know, I totally understand that you make your kids go to the doctor at the drop of a hat, but that you don't do the same for yourself. My dad was like that. I swear, if we kids had a hangnail we'd get shipped off to the doctor, but when he, later on in life, had some more serious symptoms, he ignored them and didn't go.

Sadly, we lost him at age 60, to emphysema and cancer. We found out he was that sick only one week before he died. It always hurts to lose a parent, but we lost him far sooner than we should have, which makes it even more painful.

You are important, Lee. Let's try to get your needs and priorities up a little higher on the to-do list. Give that Champix a try again and see how it goes. Would you?

I love this saying from Dr. Phil:
"The best way to take care of your kids is to take care of their mother."

Moms rock! Take care of YOU!

Hi Diane, thankyou so much for your reply, The only time in the years I did give up with no problems was when I was pregnant each time with my 4 kids. As soon as I reached 38 weeks, I started again. Yes I have tried most things from the patches to this new tablet out now called Champix. I feel it would have worked but we had a family drama and bang! I started again.
I hope it is a pinched nerve but Im on 1000mg of Naprosin for a degenerated spine so guess as you say, I need to get to the doctors. I dont know about anyone else but I push my kids at the slightest thing to get to see a doctor but myself...... Im hopeless, always something else I have to do. Thanks for your advice and the website's.

Lee,

Welcome to EmpowHer. So glad you found us!

Lee, have you been to a doctor about your smoker's cough/wheeze? Have you attempted to quit smoking?

I assume that what you are concerned about is lung cancer. The only symptom that you have that is listed under possible symptoms of lung cancer is the cough and the shortness of breath:

◦A cough that doesn't go away and worsens over time
◦Constant chest pain
◦Coughing up blood
◦Shortness of breath, wheezing, or hoarseness
◦Repeated problems with pneumonia or bronchitis
◦Swelling of the neck and face
◦Loss of appetite or weight loss
◦Fatigue

Did you exert yourself in any way that might have caused the shoulder blade pain and the numbness? What you are describing actually sounds more like a pinched nerve or a herniated disc, which can be handled with anti-inflammatory medicines and physical therapy. Could you make an appointment to get this checked out soon?

Here is our EmpowHer Encyclopedia entry on lung cancer, fyi:

And here's some information on pinched nerves and herniated discs:

Does any of that help?
