Have you ever given your doctor or specialist a gift to say thank you for the care or advice they've provided? How was it received? Should patients give gifts if they've already paid for services?
Here's an article about patients who've given their doctors wine.

Hi - I am a health care provider (Acupuncturist) and I have been given gifts on occasion. I always appreciate someone giving me a gift but it is certainly not necessary. I have only been given a bottle of wine once, usually it's a gift certificate or food.

I don't think an inexpensive, nice bottle of wine from the patient's region or a seasonal basket of fruit is a problem at all. Anything more expensive (or cash) would be inappropriate.
My problem is with pharmaceutical reps giving 'gifts' and I would be concerned about (and be distrustful of) a doctor who would accept them. I know it goes on all the time and it doesn't sit well with me.
