Q:

How can I help my sore knees?

I am in my mid 20s and have started noticing that my knees are a little sore after running up stairs and working out (especially when doing lunges, stairs, etc). My mother just had her knee replaced and has to get the other done (she's in her early 60s). Are there any preventative measures I can take now to help my knees last (and maybe avoid having to replace them when i'm older)?

Hello Hayden,

Knee replacement surgery is often the last resort when other treatment option for knee osteoarthritis fail.

You can take steps now to prevent osteoarthritis.

Maintain a healthy weight or lose weight if necessary.
Extra weight puts a lot of stress on the large, weight-bearing joints such as the knees, the hips, and the balls of the feet. Experts estimate that every 1 lb of body weight adds about 4 lb of stress to the knee.1 This means that if you lost just 5 lb, you could take 20 lb of stress off your knees.

Keep active.
Light to moderate exercise can help keep your muscles strong and reduce joint pain and stiffness.

Protect your joints.
Avoid tasks that cause pain or swelling in joints. And try to use the largest joints or strongest muscles to do things. A single major injury to a joint or several minor injuries can damage cartilage over time.

Being proactive now can decrease your risk for knee osteoarthritis in the future.

Regards.
