My scalp has been really itchy lately. I don't see any dandruff though. What can I do to make my scalp less itchy?

Hi Jessica -

Thanks for your question! An itchy scalp doesn't sound very pleasant, so let's try to find some solutions for you.

First, have you made any recent changes that could cause an allergic reaction and therefore itching? New medicines, vitamins or supplements? New shampoo or conditioner? New styling product? Changes in your water system? Anything else you can think of?

Second, how's the rest of your skin? If your skin overall is dry, then the skin on your scalp is likely to be dry as well, and the itching could be from dryness. A good hair moisturizer, rubbed into the scalp, could help.

How long have you had the itching and is it severe? If this is really bad you may want to see a dermatologist to determine if you have seborrheic dermatitis, a chronic skin condition that causes a scaly, itchy rash and includes swelling and redness of the underlying skin (inflammation). Dandruff ( a type of seborrheic dermatitis) is a mild, white scaling of the scalp (no inflammation).

Let us know your thoughts and if this helps. We hope you are able to find the answers you need.

Best,

Pat
