how do I know when pityriasis rosea is healing?

I was diagnosed with pityriasis rosea almost 6 weeks ago. Apparently it takes 6-8 weeks to disappear, but I keep finding new spots every time I shower, new red spots seem to pop up. The first ones I got seem to keep changing. Does anyone know what these spots are meant to look like before they just disappear?

Id like to get natural uv light to deal with my PR. But I live in the D.C. area and its mid fall season..November 40-55F. Does anybody know how long I should lay in my balcony for natural uv rays that would be equivalent to a tanning bed?

To get the equivalent does from a tanning bed, hours would have to be spent. And then not to mention it's fall, the U.V. isn't as strong as high summer. It would be difficult to get enough to effect the PR. If you don't want to go the tanning salon route, there are UVB Phototherapy options. But I know nothing about it, and it would seem more expensive. Maybe if you do a bit more research you can find some alternate methods. Best Of Luck!

Apple cider vinegar! Put 1 tablespoon in a cup of warm water with a little honey.... add a cup of warm water and drink 2 times a day... Then after your shower dab it on the spots undiluted and for the really itchy ones also apply zinc oxide ointment.... My school nurse recommended this and it has been a miracle help for me! The other steroid ointments and benadryl gel did nothing for it.......

Yes! This works... plus apply aquaphor ointment.... it helps with the inflammation and accompanying dry skin itch. Bathing with Head and Shoulders Refresh.. good combo to add.

I had PR about 2 years ago. When I noticed the first patch, I thought well this is nothing and will go away. Well it dried up and went away, then more came. I was concerned and went to the urgent care center, the doctor said he never seen that type of rash before and labeled it an allergic reaction. He gave me a steroid shot and prescribed oral steroid pack. It seemed like it was working for a few days, then more and more rashes appeared. The itching was so intense I was sleeping naked and had the ac turned down low.
It seemed like no end was in sight it spread all over my front and back and started creeping up my neck, so I went to the ER, the physician said this is a common skin rash called pityriasis rosea. I thought wow there is a cure to this madness, but I had never heard of this common rash...hmmmm. He said it's thought to be caused by a virus, but mine looked more like it was caused by a fungus. He prescribed antifungal cream and told me to bathe in Medicated Selsun Blue. This seemed like it was working but I ran out of the cream.
So I went to see a dermatologist, to get more cream and because I had severe dandruff. Apparently this rash spread to my scalp and caused severe flaking and itching, oh boy not this too. He prescribe antiviral acyclovir, it seemed like it worked. But not completely so he prescribed antifungal cream and shampoo. All this seemed to work as my skin cleared up, but my skin still felt a little at times like something was crawling on me. So I took matters in my own hands I did a total body cleanse 14 DAYS in the pill form and changed my diet, I cut out sodas and limited my sweet and dairy intake, since this stuff feeds fungus. I used a cup of apple cider vinegar diluted with water to rinse off in the shower, I poured on my head and let the excess run down my body. I'm back to normal.
I had PR for about 4 months, and do not wish that on anyone!

Hi, I found this forum really helpful but I need a little clarification from those of you who recommended the tanning beds, vitamins, tea tree oil, etc. My question is, are you putting suntan lotion prior to tanning? Are you putting the the tea tree oil on x2/day? What vitamins are working? For those of you using Aveeno Calming, how many times are you putting it on?
I have gone to tanning bed x3 used the prescription cream x1 week prior then stopped and used tea tree oil but can't go to work with the smell so using the calming lotion. Also, washing in Head & Shoulders Eucalyptus. Soooo long story short...it's spreading!!!! What am I doing wrong? TIA!!!!

To the person asking about the tanning bed. As i hate tanning beds (I am a red headed light complexion gal), I never stayed in more then 5 minutes at a time, and i went in dry. No lotions or anything although the gals were suggesting it, for a better tan. But that's not what i was after. TWO sessions, 10 minutes TOTAL. It left within the week. It was the fastest way to clear it up compared to other 'treatments' people have suggested. Thank goodness as the doctor said 8 weeks i could be stuck with PV, and in 8 weeks i was getting married. I couldn't take the chance of it not clearing up. Anyways, this is the best thing i would recommend.
