Q:

how do I know when pityriasis rosea is healing?

I was diagnosed with pityriasis rosea almost 6 weeks ago. Apparently it takes 6-8 weeks to disappear, but I keep finding new spots every time I shower, new red spots seem to pop up. The first ones I got seem to keep changing. Does anyone know what these spots are meant to look like before they just disappear?

Thank you so much! You've made me feel immensly better.
Tad worried that there may be another herald patch which either hasn't surfaced yet or i've just been ignornant and not noticed it but at least the main one has practically gone as you said.
I am genuinely curious as to whether me going on holiday to portugal in two weeks will be good or bad for it though..because some say the heat makes it worse but then the sun helps..so will it be like taking one step forwards and one step back with the healing process?
Thanks again :)

Going on vacation will probably be great for you as far as rest and relaxation. Whatever stress you're going through, that should help alleviate it. You should definitely still go! As far as the sun is concerned, use everything in moderation! Please use plenty of sun screen... the UV rays from the sun helped me immensely as far as the spots disappearing so it really depends on your skin type and color... the heat is what I would worry about more than the sun. I don't recommend laying in the sun all day or constantly tanning either, but sun in moderation, every day, will help! The rays not only heal but they'll give you energy!

Thank you so much for all your helpful comments they really have de-stressed me a bit which obvioulsy is a good thing. So if i'm going on holiday in to weeks that will help me get better?

Also my herald patch is practically gone, as in completely faded just the tiniest bit of dried skin if you look at it in the right light but ive only had the patch for 3 weeks to a month now and the rash only really started last week...so i'm confused as to how long it would take me to get better..also the small patches i do have are very few and dont itch during the day only a bit at night and i think thats becasue im lying there just thinking about it...any advice on what stage im at? You've all been so helpful. ALso there are some patches which are fading but others appear.. they're all about the size of half a 5p.

It sounds to me like you might have more than one herald patch, which happens in some instances. The fact that the main one is beginning to fade is a good thing. Keep doing whatever it is you're doing! PR typically lasts between a set amount of time, and some people have been known to heal in as few as 6 weeks, so your time frame of healing is not out of the ordinary if that's truly the case (which it sounds like it is). The fading process as a whole means that you will eventually be all healed up without worry of additional patches or rash occurring. Since everyone's healing time is different, I would say just continue to let it play its course. From the sounds of it, you're healing and should fully begin the healing process once new ones stop appearing or the rate at which new ones appear doesn't outweigh the ones disappearing. I hope that made sense.

Good luck.... stay positive/hopeful.... for this too shall pass.

Yes it does I have this now for 14 weeks and it has gotten a lot better a whole lot better. but now it looks red in the same areas as yours. I now have post inflammatory pigmentaion I think its from me sitting and baking in the sun. this was really the worse rash for me I didnt know it can take longer than 3months so this is really hard for me. im scared with the redness the rash is going to pop back up I still have a little rash on my leg but im trying not to stress out over it I lost a lot of weight behind stressing. GOOD LUCK everyone.

Yes I do notice redness. Mine aren't sensitive at all. I do notice that when my body temp heats up you can see faint red spots. Not in all areas just on my inside of my arms and tops of my thighs. It stinks huh?

Hello~ I had a post up from May 5th and I was at my 3 week point with PR. I had gotten my patch around the second week of April on my back. I'm now at my 12 week mark and have had no more popping up for about 3 weeks. I do have many scars from this as I have very fair skin. I do right now try to still get as much sun as I can. The sun seems to make them dry up and eventually dissapear. I know the question asked is if you only have a few spots here and there would that be the sign of them stopping. I hate to say it but no. I thought I wasn't going to get them on my arms and that was the last place it hit me. I had them everywhere. I would wake up in the morning and find a new location. Good thing is it's going to go away bad thing is it will take a while. I had them everywhere. Neck, hairline on my neck, under my breasts all over my stomach and on my back and legs and behind my knees. I had them every place except for my face. I don't think they go on your face. Feel free to post if you have questions I will definetly reply:) I know this is a difficult but keep your head up they will go away:)

Hey, i only got diagnosed with PR today, i'd had the herold patch for ages- a month? around that anyway- and was convinced that it was ringworm and was using anti fungal cream for ages until i realised it was making no difference appart from making the skin softer. i had three small red patches of skin on my neck which itched but thought it was a reaction to some perfume i had recently started to wear.
Now i have a patch on the inside of my thigh, a few tiny ones on my stomach and two regular ones on my back, one at the top and one at the bottom. they're not overly itchy but i was wondering does that mean i wont have it serioulsy bad becasue i'm going on holiday to portugal in just over two weeks and dont want to go if im covered in a rash as i wont be able to sun bathe or swim or anything :( i hope someone can tell me something that will make sense of this for me and make me feel better.
