The sensation is not there all the time. It is not related to strain, exposure or fatigue. But sometimes it is very acute causing great discomfort bordering on being unbearable. Please advice.

Thanks so much for writing and I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue. According to the Mayo Clinic, there could be a number of causes or conditions related to burning feet including:
Alcoholism
Athlete's Foot
Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
Complex regional pain syndrome
Diabetic neuropathy
Gastric bypass surgery
HIV/AIDS
Hypothyroidism
Kidney failture
Morton's Neuroma
PAD
Peripheral neuropathy
Tarsal tunnel and vitamin deficiency.
