I've been on hrt for approx 10 yrs, my dr would like me to stop. On estrace 0.5mg should take daily, however, only taken 3 pill weekly, also taking prometrium 100 mg for 12 days/monthly. I have numerous hot flashes, and wondering why I should stop taking hrt when in fact they are not synthetic. I am very healthy 65 yrs old and feel and look 15 yrs less. My mom lived until 101 yrs old.

Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER! And thank you so much for your question.

Deciding whether to use HRT -- or continue it, or stop it -- is a very individual question that millions of us are struggling with right now. You are certainly not alone.

Do you still have your uterus and/or ovaries?

Your doctor is probably reacting to evidence that longtime HRT can contribute to incidences of uterine or ovarian cancer in women who still have those organs intact. (It is not so much of a concern in women who have had hysterectomies). Or that it can contribute to the incidence of breast cancer.

Here is a very good page from the American Cancer Society that discusses different risks:

I love the fact that you are 65 and look and feel 50!! And that your mom lived to be 101! Was she on any HRT?

Is there any history of breast, uterine or ovarian cancer in your family?
