I was diagnosed with severe Ulcerative Colitis back in 2004 and have healed myself through the use of the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. There is a book called "Breaking The Vicious Cycle" which explains how and why the diet works. It's a MUST READ for anyone diagnosed with a digestive disorder. Feel free to visit my blog at www.comfytummy.com for more info. All the best to you!

Hi Mssmith-
I'm sorry about your diagnosis. Ulcerative colitis (UC) can be frustrating. It is an inflammatory bowel disease characterized by ulcers inside the mucosa of the colon. We have a page here on the site: https://www.empowher.com/media/reference/ulcerative-colitis
It is unknown what causes UC, so treatment involves supportive care, symptom management, and staying as healthy as possible. Sometimes surgery is required, but at least half of cases are mild. The National Institutes of Health has excellent information on UC http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ulcerativecolitis.html, and a great group for support and information is the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America http://www.ccfa.org/info/about/ucp.
To stay healthy you will need to work closely with your gastroenterologist. With a chronic problem like UC, it is extremely important to be a partner in your care, and to be as educated about your condition as possible.
Good luck and if we can help you further, please let us know.
