Q:

If I don't get periods, can I still get pregnant?

I have not had a cycle since June 2010 when I got off birth control. I had sex for the first time yesterday. We used protection, but I'm a naturally paranoid person so I was wondering if I could get pregnant even though I don't normally have a period?

Hello,

Since you did not get your periods after stopping birth control, chances are that you are not ovulating. Birth control pills suppress the ovaries and this can continue for months even after stopping the birth control.

Without ovulation, you cannot get pregnant. But ovulation can return at any time. And if your ovulation has returned this month, then you can get pregnant, although you have not had a period in the months since June 2010.

So, yes, you can get pregnant, although chances are less considering that you have not ovulated in many months and possibly not ovulated this month either.

You can read more about ovulation here:

I hope that helps.
