I missed 3 pills then had unprotected sex then got my period the next morn (12 hrs after) , what do you think my chances of being pregnant are-high or low? I didnt double my pills up coz I didnt know I was meant to. When can I do a test to find out? Thank you, Natalie

Thank you for your question anonymous. Yes, there is definitely a chance to have bleeding while you are pregnant. It is not a period, rather it is spotting. Spotting can occur after intercourse, heavy lifting and so forth. If you are pregnant and are experiencing bleeding, you should contact a physician immediately. There can be concern for possible miscarriage or an infection.

You really shouldn't be continuing to use birth control methods while pregnant either. Do you think you may be pregnant? Have you taken a pregnancy test?

Thanks for the reply! I missed two pills twice in one week and doubled up both times. I thought I might be pregnant and took a preg. test one week later (later to find that the test can't detect it that early). I just finish my pills last Sunday and got my period, but I was just wondering if this is just due to the withdrawel boold from the pill. It was fairly heavy, not spotting. Perhaps I should take another test to be sure. Any more info would be appreciated!

I have been reading the posts and they are very informative, but I am still wondering if you can still be pregnant even if you get your period because it is withdrawel blood when you are on the hormone free pills for the week and not a menstrual cycle. Is this correct?

Hey My name is Kate and i have been reading everyones posts and it is fascinating how complicated it all seems. I have been taking Mercilon 21 for a few years now and i started the pill on the 15th of december and forgot to take 3 pills on the 25-28th as it was christmas and all. I did have unprotected sex but i did double up on the pill so i know my chances of getting pregnant are slim. Is there any chance though as i secretly hope i am and almost feel that i am which i know sounds strange but maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me. What do you think my chances are????

This is still Annabelle, Ive been reading through the posts and Im confused- do you ovulate while you're on the pill or not? If you suddenly stop do you ovulate then?Sorry, I'm just so confused!! And I didn't do any doubling up of my pills :s Annabelle x

Hi Annabelle,
It's OK..it is confusing!!

The pill is thought to work in three ways:
1. Preventing ovulation
2. Altering the cervical mucus (makes it difficult for sperm to swim through)
3. Altering the uterine lining (so if you do ovulate, and if sperm does get through the cervix to fertilize the egg, the uterine lining environment is not conducive for implantation)

This is why the pill can not be 100% effective at preventing pregnancy (it's close, at 99%), because it ideally prevents ovulation every time, but it can't be 100% guaranteed that it does for every woman, every cycle.

If you suddenly stop taking the pill, it is unknown when you may ovulate. Every woman is different, and seeing as how an egg may be released while you take a pill, it may also be released the day-after you stop the pill....or it may take your body a few months for it's hormones to begin the process of regularly ovulating on a predictable basis.

It helps to know that ovulation is not a one-time occurrence every month, but our body's hormones are actually working every day through a process that leads to the maturation of an egg, the release of the egg ("ovulation"), the thickening of the uterine lining...and a million other reproductive-processes throughout every cycle. These are the reasons it is impossible to know when exactly a woman will ovulate when she stops taking the pill, as none of it is an exact science.

Does that answer your question? Do you have any more questions?

Thanks Alison thats really helpful. I missed 2 pills then had unprotected sex then the next day (today) have come on my period. It was the first 2 days of the third week I missed and I didnt double up or anything. I know there's a risk of me being pregnant but are you able to tell me if its a high/low risk and when I can do a test to be sure? Thanks, Annabelle x
