Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

I got the flu shot 1.5 weeks ago. It hurt a bit going in and then after a few days I didn’t think about it. A couple times at night it aches a little bit if I slept on that side, but I really didn’t think about it too much and just figured it was normal healing. Just yesterday it started to ache during the day, so much so that I felt a little bit faint and nauseated. A bruise has now appeared and I thought it looked a bit high for a flu shot. I became worried about whether it could be infected and that is when I started researching and found this website. (Thank you for having a forum like this available.). I will report my flu shot reaction to the CDC, and will start a record of how my arm feels each day. Hopefully with light exercise and light massaging to the area my arm will begin to heal.

I would recommend trying to exercise the arm if possible. There are some exercises for a frozen shoulder as follows: https://www.health.harvard.edu/shoulders/stretching-exercises-frozen-shoulder

I found for me the behind the back towel stretch was what worked the best for me. My therapist had me use what amounts to a wide rubber band for stretching exercises. But to be honest if the pain gets worse. See a Orthopedic surgeon for a cortisone shot. That was the quickest way for me to get fixed up. The shot will raise your sugar levels so consult your diabetes specialist if needed.

I, like many who have posted previously, am experiencing extreme pain in the bicep where the flu shot was administered exactly 2 weeks ago this Tuesday.

I'm still in shock: how could something as innocuous as a flu shot cause such pain?

My Doctor feels it will go away.

My question is this (and I'll make it short and sweet): What was the most effective home remedy you found to be effective?

I don't want to go to any more specialists, but this is just flat out unbearable at times.

Any suggestions/information would very much be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

I too had this experience after receiving a flu shot in 2015. Never had a problem or even soreness after the shot and have been getting a flu shot for 15 years before this. Doctors brushed it off acting like they never heard of this kind of thing before and offered no resolution except pain meds, of course. Pain lasted for 6 months, just like everyone else describes and I believe exercising my arm over that time fixed the problem. I was active in lifting light weights before this incident and I could not lift a 3lb dumbell after the shot without serious pain. I am fine now and will never get another flu shot. I also reported it to the vaccine injury website but didn't pursue anything as I did get better. Hope this helps, I feel for you.

Hi, Ive had flu jabs for over 10 years now. I had my jab for this year 2 weeks ago and I have to say that the pain in the top of my left arm is horrendous. I cant sleep on that side as the pain and deep aching keeps me awake. Ive never had a reaction like this before. I'm concerned reading the amount of people who have had bad reactions, and where its affected the arm for long periods of time. Not sure I will be opting for the vaccine next year.

Been a long time since I reported my issue on this thread. I am pleased to say I got my issues corrected. The Orthopedic Dr reported that I had developed "Frozen Shoulder" which can happen anytime the shoulder becomes inflamed and you slow down or discontinue use due to pain. In some cases attempts to use it when it is already inflamed can cause it to get worse. I my case he corrected it with a shot of cortisone directly to my shoulder. Mind you I still needed physical therapy for a while. Which in reality you can probably due at home with some exercises you can probably find online. I do suggest keeping doing the exercises occasionally to keep your shoulder from freezing up again. I am still convinced it was caused by the shot but none of the doctors agreed with this. In my case the shot giver was a newbie and I think she missed the intended spot or was overzealous.

The same thing happened to me I received a flu shot in my right arm and my arm been in pain for seven months I cannot move my arm I cannot lift things like I used to my arm has not been the same. I made a appointment to see my doctor and I explain to him what happened to my arm and he said these things to happen when you receive the flu shot he said just exercise your arm and it will get better and it hasn't gotten better it's gotten worse.
