Is it safe to have sex when diagnosed with pityriasis rosea?

My dermatologist told me I have pityriasis rosea and that it would take a few weeks for the rashes on my back to disappear. During this time, can have sex with my boyfriend? Is there any chance of him catching it from me or is there some way we can ensure safe sex?

Hi, Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER, and thank you for your question!

We have an EmpowHER page on pityriasis rosea, which helps with all kinds of information about symptoms, treatment and risk factors:

The rash itself isn't contagious, so there's no worry that you could give it to your boyfriend. Doctors aren't sure why people get pityriasis rosea. But it's not spread by contact, so the only worries you would have with sex is whether you would be uncomfortable during it due to the rash.
