Just before I get my period, I get a brownish discharge and it has a funny smell, does this mean I have an infection.

No, this is normal. During ovulation, which is prior to your period, your body is producing a lot of mucous lining. All this gets discharged because no ovum has been fertilized.

Do pay attention, though, to any changes in this discharge, like color and texture (yellow, clumpy) and a really foul odor. If that happens, go see your OB/GYN.
