just wondering

I took my last birth control pill last wednesday night and have had sex with my husband a couple times. I have been on the pill for two months but could not afford to refill the prescription at the time. We have a three month old and I am not sure if I am ready to be pregnant again so soon. We had sex while I was getting to the last days of my period so I am not sure if I would be ovulating at the time. Should I refill my birth control, or wait a couple weeks and take a pregnancy test?

Dear Anon,

Depending on the average cycle of your period, you can estimate when you will be ovulating. But that is just an estimate and nothing is guaranteed.

Considering that you have had sex and (possibly) conceived, my recommendation is to get your prescription filled but don't start taking them again until you have confirmed that you are NOT pregnant. In the meantime, I would suggest that you abstain from sexual intercourse or use a condom when you have sex with your husband between now and then.

Best of luck to you, I completely understand when you say you are not quite ready for another baby--I have a 6 month old myself. Congratulations!
