I am currently on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and in the past week and a half I have missed several birth control pills. Today, I had a dark brown discharge and now it has turned into what seems to be a normal period. Since I missed quite a few pills, I read to throw away that pack and start a new one, and so I have not taken any pills this week, due to the fact that I'm going to start a new pack on Sunday (because I'm a Sunday starter and wanted to keep it that way.) Me and my husband have had unprotected sex and I have read on the internet where this bleeding can be caused by "implantation bleeding" which can occur 5-10 days after conception. Do you think this could be what is causing my irregular bleeding or do you think It's just from missing a few pills? Any advice would help, Thanks!

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question. Missing your pill can also cause irregular bleeding since when you start taking the placebo pills, your body will release eggs. So this may be one cause of your bleeding.
There is also the chance for pregnancy when you have unprotected sex but since you missed pills, I would be partial to think that it is probably the missed pills. Implantation bleeding would not really look like a period. It would be more of a pinkish color or brownish discharge.
August 22, 2009 - 9:11amIf you have any concern, stop by a local pharmacy, drug store or dollar store and pick up a pregnancy test to be sure. This may settle the nerves too.
Do you often miss your pills? I know that I was the worst pill taker and I had to conform to a new birth control method that I didn't need to remember (everyday). There are several other forms of birth control that may be helpful to keep you guarded without having to remember everyday.
Here are just a few other options that may be helpful from Woman's Health.gov. http://www.womenshealth.gov/faq/birth-control-methods.cfm.
