My neighbour with Paranoid Schizophrenia has been threatening me through verbal abuse. He believes that I am making too much noise in my unit above him. I am not making much noise except for those that may be associated with everyday living. I think that he is having delusions and is hearing the noises that aren't there. what can I d to stay safe, and is this common?

there is indeed a great deal to be concerned about. schizophrenics can respond violently to a perceived threat. my neighbour cut through the screen of my bedroom window and was waiting for me in my bedroom when i got home. she attacked me with a knife. i had no idea who she was, and later found out that she had pictures of me in on her computer, and that i was sendng her messages and making her do things. so, call the police. many schizophrenics belong in the hospital. be careful. avoid him. move.

Yes, it is very common to hear voices and be delusional when you have schizophrenia. There is nothing to be afraid of and the only thing that you can do is be aware of the situation. If he is taking his medications, they are usually harmless. When they do not take their medications, is when things are scary.

I know it is a scary and weird situation but awareness would be your best bet. Here is a link to information about schizophrenia from the Mayo Clinic http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/schizophrenia/DS00196.

I spent several years very close to someone who had schizophrenia and the only thing that scared me was the midnight phones calls that were delusional. She was always talking about random people that didn’t exist but it was nothing to fear.

I hope this helps.
