I'm 16 years old and my periods are normally irregular. It has only once been this late though before. I've been having light cramps for the past few days but i never really get bad ones anyways. I've also has diarrhea but i usually get that around the time of my period. I have exams at the moment if that can be any help but I'm not overly stressed about them. I put in my menstrual cup this afternoon and realized there was a really bad odor, never had it before. Can anyone help?

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to our community.

Odor can also come from the bacteria that naturally accumulates during your period.

When you’re bleeding, you retain moisture in the vagina, which can lead to secondary vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis, which has a strong, fishy odor.

Bacterial vaginosis is that it occurs when the bacteria that's normally found in your vagina is out of balance, and can either go away on its own or be treated with antibiotics.

Change your menstrual cup regularly and try to wear cotton underwear and breathable clothing, not a lot of spandex or tight clothing during your period to reduce sweating. Although it's not the main cause of period blood odor, sweat can definitely contribute to it.

If you have further concerns, please contact your gynecologist.

Regards,
Maryann
