Is this normal to happen to a vagina?

I'm 18, a virgin, and I don't know much about my body. I honestly have always been too afraid to look at my vagina, but I did tonight, and the entrance of it looks like it's blocked by a white ball... Is this normal? Is this the hymen or is it something weird that I should be worried about?

Dear Anon,
It may be your hymen. The hymen is a partial mucous membrane covering the entrance of your vagina. It is usually shaped like a crescent moon to allow menstruation to flow. I have posted two links. The first is the picture of the anatomy of a vagina-- I have to put a disclaimer: It is a picture of a REAL vagina, not a drawing and is not intended for pornography, rather to better illustrate the parts of the woman's genitalia.
The second are drawings of what the hymen may look like. I think both pictures will help!
