Hi
I had my periods on 12th of this month and was a normal period lasted for 7 days. I got Viral fever and cold on my Cycle day 9 and was prescribed antibiotics for one week. Now I am experiencing a delay in ovulation.Today is my 16th day and not yet ovulated.Usually I ovulate on 15th day. Can fever and antibiotics can cause a delay in ovulation.?

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Thank you for reaching out to us with such an interesting question.

There is no evidence that taking antibiotics affects your menstrual cycle, but if you are wondering: can antibiotics delay a period? The answer may be related to your condition.

Physical and emotional stress is common factors that can delay your period. Therefore, if you have a UTI or other infection that is causing significant stress to your body, it is possible that your menstrual cycle may be affected and your period delayed. On these days, when you are taking antibiotics for your infection, it may be the physical stress on your body that is actually disturbing your cycle, especially when it occurs during the first half of your cycle, and not the antibiotics per se.

Consider speaking with your physician about this.

Regards,
Maryann

But I heard that both antibiotics and estrogen are being metabolised in the liver so that it can slow down the estrogen mechanism causing delay/skip in ovuĺation.?
I had interaction with my man last month 24th and i got my periods on 12th of July. Now I'm scared that Im pregnant. But is it possible to get menses and pregnancy simultanously.?? Im sure that the bleeding was not implantation bleeding since it lasted 7 days and had heavy flow and contained clots and was blood red color.Im not having any symptoms yet.
So is this delay in ovulation due to my medical condition or am I pregnant.? But I got periods after the interaction.

Hello Anonymous,

I did find one online source that said antibiotics can affect estrogen levels and thus interfere with ovulation. But, I could not find medical or scientific evidence to support this claim. That is why I suggested you speak with your physician.

If you had a normal period after intercourse on June 24, you did not become pregnant.

Though some women have spotting during pregnancy, they do not have a normal monthly period and still remain pregnant. Heavy or period like bleeding during pregnancy is a sign of a miscarriage.

Why do you think ovulation was delayed?
