Period is 21 days late, but negative hpt

I am 28 years old. In Dec I got two periods, one on the 5th and one on the 23rd. It skipped January so that would make me 21 days late. I sometimes feel a tingling sensation in my lower abdomen and sort of jittery. I took 3 hpt's last week but they were all negative. My doctor's appt is not till next week Friday. Could I be pregnant?
This is very frustrating as I miscarried in May of last year, and my fiance' and I are so anxious to be pregnant again.

This post is exactly what I'm going through now, except obviously, years later. I had my last period December 3rd and was due to have one December 27th as I have a 25 day cycle normally. Today I am 21 days late with no positive pregnancy tests. I just had a serum pregnancy test today and won't have results for 2 days. I'm usually never late, and if I am it's only by a day or two, give or take. I think I may have ovulated late this month due to stress from losing my sister. I have had an abundance of cervical mucus which isn't normal for me. It's goes back and forth from super watery to super egg white. That is, up until yesterday and I got pretty dry. My breasts hurt, but not to the touch, just sore. I had a metallic soapy taste in my mouth the week I should have had my period and the following week but it's gone down some. I've been TTC for over a year. And I just don't understand why I keep getting negative hpts.

Hi Diane,
Well had some blood work done at the doctor's today and should be going in next week for a follow up. From other symptoms, like a single hair that is growing from my forehead and a few unwanted chin hairs, and my trouble losing some extra pounds, in addition to the irregular period, they have diagnosed that I may have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). I've been prescribed Metformin to help regulate my cycle which may also help with the weight loss and take care of those other symptoms.
I am currently doing some further research on this syndrome and this medication. Your insights about my hormones being out of sync were on the mark. Thanks!
Keep you posted!

So glad to know you may be on the trail of finding out what's up. It's so good to know when we're on the right track!

You may already have found it, but we have a good explainer page on PCOS here:

And here's a link to the PCOS support group web site. They have loads of helpful information, including a list of tests you may need. There's a newsletter, information on the latest treatments and a message board forum where women help one another:

And here's the drugs.com page on Metformin:

I hope you'll come back and let us know more when you get your test results. And please don't hesitate to ask if there's anything more we can help you research.

Hi, Steach,

Welcome to EmpowHer! Thank you so much for your question.

It sounds like one of two things might be possible.

One of them is, of course, that you could be pregnant. If you are 21 days late, that means that your most fertile time period would have been about January 8-9 or thereabouts. Do you remember if you had unprotected sex around those dates?

HPTs are set up to detect HCG in your urine, a hormone that is present only when you are pregnant. The fact that your pregnancy tests have been negative so far could mean either that there is not enough HCG in your system to detect (which seems difficult to believe at 21 days late) or that you aren't pregnant after all.

And if you're not pregnant, my best guess would be that something has your hormones a little out of balance. The fact that you got two periods in December and then skipped one is a good hint. It's incredibly frustrating when you're trying to get pregnant, I know. But the dance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in our bodies is a delicate thing and it can be thrown off by a lot of factors, like medicines (antibiotics especially), diet, exercise and stress (December is a prime month for this).

I'm glad you have a doctor's appointment to get this checked out. There's nothing harder than waiting and hoping, is there?

Thanks Diane for your comment. To answer your first question, yes we had unprotected sex during that time frame. It is frustrating to wait, and although today is Sunday, Friday seems so long away.
Will let you know how things go.

Hang in there. I know it seems like a long time. I have my fingers crossed for you.
