Period 9 days late-Negative HPT

Had a regular and very on time period for the past 2 years straight. Was diagnosed with PCOS but stopped taken Metformin for about 10 months now and my period was still very on time. Took 2 HPT and both were negative a couple days ago. Haven't been feeling too upset or sick but have noticed that I have had about 3 bowel movements daily when I usually only have one in the morning and that's it. M/C 2 and a half years ago and haven't been able to get pregnant since. Is there a possibility that I am pregnant and not showing on the home tests yet?

I recently have been having the same probablem I haven't had a period since April 24th. I took a hpt 3days ago and got a negative result. My breast are tender (not unsual for me usually do that when I'm on my period) but within the last week I've noticed I've had plenty more bowel movements then normal.

Hi Alison,
Well I took the HPT when I was 3 and 4 days late. Haven't taken another one since but going to take another one tomorrow morning. Last period was on May 3rd and the last time we had sex was on May 30th. And yes we have been trying to conceive and it is a bit frustrating having been unsuccessful for 2 years. Thanks for the added information!

I'm not sure taking another HPT is worth your emotional effort, honestly (there is always that glimmer of hope, and I think you would be disappointed again, unfortunately). If you took the HPT after you were late...you can trust in the results.

Are you using any type of tracking for your fertility, such as ovulation predictor kits, tracking cervical mucus, using the calendar to track symptoms, etc?

Have you talked with your doctor more in-depth about your PCOS diagnosis, trying to conceive for 2 years, and what options are available to you?

Hi Alison,
Well GREAT NEWS! Took the HPT this morning with my first urine and there it was the 2 lines we have been hoping for. We are so elated we went to the store to purchase 2 more of different brands and they all came out positive. Calling my doc today to make an appointment!

Hi Rosa,
Well I am 30 years old and I do know that it is common for a woman to skip a period. However, my question was about the possibility of being pregnant but negative hpt after being 9 days late on a regular cycle. And what about my increase bowel movements? Can this be a sign or symptom of pregnancy? I've read online where some people have had negative urine tests only to have a blood test done and it showed up positive. So your response of NO didn't really address the points in my question. Can any one share their opinion on these concerns that I have. Thanks!

The timing of the HPT is also important, and it sounds like you are trying to conceive (so you are hopeful that the test was inaccurate, right?).

If you tested at the time of your missed period (at least 2 weeks after unprotected sex), the HPT is about 99% accurate at detecting any "pregnancy hormones".

Your other symptoms of increased bowel movements can be a sign or symptom of numerous conditions...or no condition at all. Early pregnancy symptoms and pre-menstrual symptoms are almost identical, and changes in bowel movements can be hormone-related (either pregnancy or pre-menstrual). However, it could also be a sign of stress, diet, illness, new medication, upset stomach...the list goes on.

If you are trying to conceive, and your period is 9 days late, you may choose to test again in another week if your period does not begin. As Rosa said...women can miss a period and it does not necessarily indicate a pregnancy or any other condition, if you used the HPT at the appropriate time (mentioned above).

Hi Steach,

No, if you got a negative HPT you are not pregnant. It is common for a woman to skip or miss a period at some point in their lives. However, if you continue to miss periods please contact your doctor.

All the best,

Rosa
