Periods behaving strangely

Hi,

I recently asked the question if I was pregnant because the month of Jan had been strange in terms of my intake of birth control (which I have been regular on). I had regular periods from Jan 4-11th, I took the pill on the 12th, but missed it from the 13th to 17th but took it from the 18th onwards and have been daily taking it till now. I was sexually active on Jan 25/26th and I did a pregnancy test, which was negative. I am still have an onset of period bleeding though. I am still continuing to take my regular regiment of the white pill as I will be with my bf from the 12th to the 22nd of Feb and I want to remain protected. When I went to the bathroom, I saw bits and pieces of the uterus lining too just now but very minute fragments. Any suggestions why my periods are being this way? If so, how long will they last? They usually last 4 days on a normal cycle but its surprising that they are still happening even though I have been on the active pill since the 18th Jan.

Hi Maryann,

I think thats what I have been told. I am meeting my doctor tomorrow but I wanted to be sure. Should I keep on taking the active pills anyways?

Thank you so much,
Nidhi

Hi Maryann,

I did meet with her. And as you had predicted, it was due to the fact that I had missed the 4 days earlier in January and thus, she has given me progestogen-only pills to help with the spotting/breakthrough bleeding I am guessing. I have been having bleeding akin to early stages of periods since Sunday. A mix of blood plus brown discharge but nothing heavy. I would prefer to avoid taking the progestogen if I can and she had said to wait it out the next two days (since my period cycle is only 4 days naturally) and see what happens. I was reading somewhere that taking 1000mg of Vitamin C can also help regulate and help overcome the breakthrough bleeding? Do you think it is a good idea to take it along with birth control pills? At this point, I am willing to try anything to stop this breakthrough bleeding - I am feeling weak and its an annoyance, to be honest.

Hi Nidhi,

I am not aware that Vitamin C has any impact on regulating or ending breakthrough bleeding.
Vitamin C is needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body. It helps the body make collagen, an important protein used to make skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is needed for healing wounds, and for repairing and maintaining bones and teeth.

Follow your doctor's advice. Because you have had prolonged bleeding, you might consider added iron rich food to your diet. Prolonged bleeding leads to iron deficient anemia.

Dietary sources of iron include: red meat, pork, poultry, seafood, beans, dark green leafy vegetables, dried fruit such as raisins, and iron-fortified cereals, breads and pasta.

Maryann

Hi Maryann,

Thank you for your advice. I didn't end up buying the Vitamin C. Today, the bleeding is behaving like a normal period but I am wondering how long the breakthrough bleeding will last ? I will definitely have more iron-rich foods till it stops. It does make me feel weak. My usual cycle is 4 days and right now, its dry in the night, yesterday I saw dark brown blood so I thought it might be coming to an end but today, its again dark red/dark brown again.

Thank you so much,
Nidhi

Hello Nidhi,

I can appreciate your concern that you continue to have a vaginal bloody discharge while taking your active birth control pills.
It might be caused by missing four days of active hormone containing pills, but please consult your gynecologist about this.

Regards,
Maryann
