Premature Ovarian Failure/HRT/No Cycle

Hello. My name is Simone. I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure a little over a year ago and have been prescribed Premphase (HRT/0.625 mg; 14 maroon (take first two weeks of month)/14 light blue pills (take second two weeks of month to induce a cycle) to take by mouth every day. My body was not producing enough estrogen to induce a cycle on its own because of the POF. My last menstrual cycle was May 21st. I did not have a menstrual cycle in June. I was not sure what to do and figured it was not a big deal with skipping a few doses, so I went ahead and started my July medication, despite not having a cycle in June. Now I am starting to wonder if I should contact my Dr or wait it out. I have had no problems so far in this area until now. I am not sure if this is a normal thing that happens occasionally and I should wait it out till the end of this month to see if I have a cycle for July or if I should contact my Dr to see if something may be wrong. I currently do not have insurance, so I want to see if I could get a round about answer about what I should do before I call the Dr or to even see if I need to talk to the Dr yet. This is more or less a piece of mind thing, so any help/insight into this would be really helpful! I appreciate any response!

Hi Simone,

Thanks for your post and Welcome to EmpowHer! Premphase is a combination of estrogen and progestin hormones. It is prescribed to relieve any premenopausal symptoms and prevent osteoporosis. Premphase may or may not cause vaginal bleeding but it isn't meant to restore ovarian function. Unfortunately, your period may continue to be irregular, what the medication is doing is helping restore some of the hormones that your body isn't producing and relieving these early symptoms of menopause that Premature Ovarian Failure causes.
You may or may not have a July period, but this is expected with POF. Continue taking your medication as prescribed, preferably at the same time every day.
