I began taking paroxetine several years ago for peri-menopause symptoms (mood swings, hot flashes, anxiety). I take 20 mg just before bed once a day. Although, the paxil has greatly/tremendously helped my mood swings, hot flashes, and anxiety, I have noticed side affects that I really don't care for. I have gained almost 50 pounds, while constantly dieting and exercising. I watch very closely what I eat because I have food allergies to Wheat, and Nightshade foods (potatoe, tomatoe, pepper, etc). I consider myself active along with the exercise. I have also noticed a much decreased sexual interest. Although, I used to smoke - I quit before using the paxil. I have an alcholic beverage only on occassion. I am 45 with a great husband and two wonderful children.

Thanks for writing and advocating for your health!
Paroxetine is an anti-depressant, and the side effects of this drug can include weight changes, mood changes, loss of libido and more. In other words, some of the symptoms you are having could be caused by the drug rather than relieved by it. You should also be aware that if you plan to stop taking the medication it is best to work with your doctor to develop a monitored withdrawal process as side effects can develop from stopping the drug suddenly. You can find more information here: http://www.drugs.com/cdi/paroxetine.html
There are many natural ways to treat depression and the symptoms that you've listed. You can find many helpful articles in our peri-menopause section: https://www.empowher.com/condition/perimenopause

Dear Anon,
There are many challenges for us when we hit peri-menopause. The positive thing is there are natural alternatives that are safe to use with out the undesirable side effects.
Therapeutic Grade essential oils are one of the safest ways to address your challenge. I have written a thread on the group site "Everyday Oils for Everyday Living" call Essential Oils May Be Beneficial for Menopause.
One product call Progessence is mentioned and that may be the answer you are looking for.
Please let me know if I can be of future help.
