I had a tubal ligation performed 15 years ago and a Endometrial ablation 6 years ago but still have very heavy menstrual cycles. I have missed my period by 15 days and have severe lower back pain, fatigue and just feel blah. Is it possible I could be pregnant??

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community!

There have been cases where women who have had tubal ligations still get pregnant, but it is very very rare. In most instances, tubal ligations prevent women from becoming pregnant. Some women do suffer from what is known as post-tubal ligation syndrome. The most common symptoms for that include heavy periods, moods swings, hot flashes, anxiety, depression, fatigue, vaginal dryness and forgetfulness. It is very possible that these heavier periods are coming from your tubal ligation. Have you always experienced heavier periods since getting your procedure done 15 years ago, or is it more recent?

It is very rare to be pregnant after having a tubal ligation, but the only way to truly know is to take a pregnancy test. I would also suggest setting up an appointment with your doctor to discuss your heavier periods. They will be able to look further into it and see if your procedures are the main cause of your heavy menstrual cycles.

I hope this has helped! Please let me know if you have further questions.

Best,
Erin
