Q:

what are final stages of PPA?

My wife was diagnosed with PPA about 4 years ago. She is now 66 years old. My daughter says that she thinks she has had this disease earlier, gradually got worse over the years. The hardest part is to get her to change her clothes and will refuse to change them. It is just about impossible to get her washed up and bathed. I have to tell her she cannot come with me when I go to the store unless she changes clothes. Her appetite is almost nil. She talks a lot, which is good, and I can understand 98% of what she is talking about. I am in process of selling the house and moving into independent living with opportunity to move into assisted living when necessary. Any idea what is ahead of me? What websites can I visit to see if other people can help me keep her clean and eating? She loves going to church and is always telling people that they are the best, wonderful and she loves them. She is friendly to everyone, but VERY stubborn at home when I want her to bathe, change clothes, undergarments.

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

PPA is a complicated disease and it's unique in it's application to each person. Some people are almost mute a few years after diagnosis and others, like your wife, are totally understandable.
She may go on for years like this.

Her personal hygiene situation, however, is problematic. Can you have a nursing assistant help in this area? Sometimes a professional is a better option. If you are going into an independent living community, and it has an assisted living facility attached, you may be able to privately hire an assistant for an hour a day to assist in bathing and general hygiene.
