Common postpartum complication include infection, excessive bleeding following delivery, perineal pain, and postpartum depression.

Newborns who require admission to the NICU are born prematurely,
experience difficulties during delivery, or show signs of a problem in the first few days of life.

Anemia is the most common complication requiring admission to the NICU. In full-term or preterm infants, hemolytic disease of the newborn, which is incompatibility between the blood types of the mother and baby, can also lead to anemia.

Apnea, which is usually caused by immaturity in the area of the brain that controls the drive to breath, is another neonatal complication.

Bradycardia, which is the abnormal slowing of the heart, often arises from other problems like low oxygen levels in the blood or apnea.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia occurs in different infants for different reasons. It can happen in full-term as well as premature infants . It is the most common chronic lung diseases in infants in the United States.
