Q:

What causes a clicking sound in the neck?

Hi everyone,

I was having lunch today with a good friend of mine and she was telling me how she's been having this really weird clicking sound in her neck that she notices when she turns her head from side to side.

I asked her more about it and she said as far as she can tell she is the only one who can hear it, it came on suddenly, and she does not have pain or numbness or anything.

She spends a lot of time on the computer and I'm voting for poor posture contributing to a neck issue of some type. She said that lately when she kind of rolls her head around she can make her neck kind of do a popping thing. She said she's also under a lot of stress lately so she's wondering if that's part of it.

Does anyone else here have a clicking neck when you turn your head? If so, did it go away on its own or did you need to see a doctor and or a chiropractor? I want to try to help my friend if we can. Thanks everyone! Michelle

My carotid ultrasound did not show any abnormalities. A couple of days after my visit to the chiropractor (who adjusted the joint bones in my neck), the clicking subsided quite a bit. I feel it occasionally but believe it's stress/tension related more than anything. That said, we are all different so if you feel like something is wrong, certainly see a doctor! It doesn't hurt to ask questions, and you shouldn't feel embarrassed to bring up any issues or concerns you have. I'm sure my doctor thought I was being a little neurotic but I have a sense of peace about things now.

how is your neck feeling now? I have also started chiropractic treatments and hope that it will subside...

I've had the clicking in my neck for a couple of years but started to ache at the start of the year. Went for physio for a while but not much difference. I then got made redundant from my job (and was happy to do so) and spent the next 9 weeks on gardening leave and didn't have any pain or clicking until I started my present job and now it's back with a vengeance! I can feel myself tensing up but will try to do the exercises given and am also learning to ease the muscles in my jaw when tense.
Great site, pleased I'm not the only one with this problem.

how strange that it subsided once you were off work and then returned, does this make you believe that it is a muscle imbalance issue?

I've been having some neck-clicking as well over the last several weeks. I went in for my annual physical with my doctor and she ordered a carotid ultrasound since I told her the clicking was silent but felt like it was coming from within my neck (not along my spine). Results were normal. Went to my chiropractor and he feels it is from the joints rubbing together (tiny little neck joints). I don't have pain but it's an odd feeling, kind of indescribable - just a dull blah feeling. It almost feels like my neck is "stuck" or that something inside my neck is sticking. I've had something similar with what my doctor calls a "dangling rib" (women have them) which sometimes clicks and rubs against other bones.

Same here! I have no pain but the feeling is really annoying. As he/she said my neck feel tightened when I don't move my neck. What I try to do is not to pay attention to it and try to be steady and not to move my neck. I know it is difficult but the click is there unless you move your neck.

That possibly the best description of what I have!

I thought I wouldn't get any results when I typed "neck clicking" in my search engine. So glad I found this. Mine just started a couple of weeks ago. It's right at the base of my neck where the spine starts. I sit at a computer for work, but always have. Nothing all that different has happened. I suppose it could be stress, but I have 4 kids (including 2 teens) -- when don't I have stress??? I'm only 45 and shouldn't be falling apart yet, right? I guess I'll wait it out for a while and see what happens.

I did the same thing. Didn't think I would get any result. The popping in my neck started about 2 weeks ago also. I recently started exercising, but the popping is all the time now. Every few minutes as I turn my head, it just clicks. At first, I didn't think anything of it, however, it is starting to annoy me and make me think that there might be somehing going wrong. Haven't contacted my doctor yet. Not sure what to do at this time. There is no pain, but popping seems to be increasing, rather than decreasing.

I forgot to mention there are many other conditions that can cause mineral loss i.e. high protein diet, large coffee or soda intake, low mineral diet, menopause etc...
