I am sixteen years old. i started my period when i was nine. but for the past three or so years my period has been very irregular. it'll skip for, at the most, 2 1/2 months. My mom's not sure what's going on. i have no older sister to ask for help. I dont know what to do! I've never had sex, so i know it's not some sort of STD. Could someone please help me?

Dear Anon,
Thank you for your post. Because you are a teenager, having irregular period can actually be normal. As a teen your body is going through many changes and having a "normal" for your body right now, means having to skip a month or two. You may get your period this month but maybe not get your next one until August. It is also normal if you get your period for only 2 days this month and 7 days the next time.

With that being said, your period can also be irregular as a result of medications, excessive exercise, or thyroid problems. I would advise that since it has been 3 years since your period has been irregular, that you pay a visit to your doctor. He or she can better advise you whether or not this is just a normal reaction from your body or if further evaluation is required.
