I have never been regular, but I've never had a period last this long before. I hadn't had a period for four months. My period started out of no where and it's been lasting for three weeks now. I'm really worried. What could be wrong? If I go to the doctor will I have to be examined or be put on birth control or both?? I feel really uncomfortable about going to the doctor, but I wanna know what's wrong and what they'll do. Please help!!!!

Guide

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Prolonged menstrual bleeding also known as Menorrhagia, is defined as bleeding that goes beyond a week. I would advise that you make an appointment to see your doctor. Often times, long menstruation are treated with birth control/hormones but it can also indicate other health issues.

I hope this helps.

Be well,
