Have you been ill? The medical term for coughing up blood is hemoptysis. Hemoptysis is the coughing up of blood or blood-stained mucus from the bronchi, larynx, trachea, or lungs. This can occur with infections such as tuberculosis, bronchitis, or pneumonia, and certain cardiovascular conditions and also lung cancer.
