I am 57 years old, active (walk about 60-80 min per day) eat healthy, how come I cannot lose weight especially in my midsection? I am perimenopausal which I'm sure isn't helping. But all the articles I read say eat right and exercise, but I do that. Any other tips?

Hi, I'm Sharon, 47, and 2 years post-hysterectomy and thus menopausal, too.  As Maryann said, as we age our metabolism really does change, but I was surprised at just how much.  I remember in my 20's and 30's hearing things about how I had to eat under 2,000 calories per day to lose weight, even slowly.  I was having a lot of the same problems you are, and it was very frustrating.  Then, I asked my doctor, who was a woman my age, who had lost a lot of weight recently, and she said that at my age to maintain my weight, I needed to eat about 1100 or so calories per day now, and to lose weight (without HCG or any other diet aid) I needed to eat under 900 calories per day.  That was a drastic change of math in my mind.  Check with your doctor; you may find that even with exercise and eating healthier, your old number guidelines may just not apply anymore...  Hang in there; yes, it's aggravating, but if you can find the right balance and feel more like yourself again, it's definitely worth it!  And, I've found that personally, a leaner, lighter diet overall really reduces things like hot flashes, night sweats and general sluggishness, too!

Hello Anonymous,

As we age, our metabolic rate slows down and we do not burn calories and lose weight as easily as we once did.

I am 57 years old and four years postmenopausal. I found that exercises to firm the abdominal muscles have helped me.

Here is the link to an article "Top 10 Fat Burning Ab Exercises for Women" that you might find helpful.
