Q:

Why does even 5 minutes of sun cause headache - and 10 mins cause nausea?

My husband gets a pretty severe headache when in the sun for only 4-5 minutes, sometimes even with a baseball cap on but definitely when he is hatless. Today he was outside for about 4 minutes for a fire drill at work and his headache formed in 4 minutes of sun exposure.

20 or more minutes causes nausea and an hour, even with a baseball cap, can cause vomiting. Our summers are pretty hot and sunny (yay for me, nay for him!). I am wondering why this extreme reaction to sun happens? He did not grow up in a place with hot summers but I didn't either and I don't have this problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, I have the same issue.
It has started quite recently, within the past two or so years (note that I'm 18). I have to spend every summer inside my house because standing in the sun longer than 40 minutes will make me extremely nauseous. Returning back inside to dark will I drink a lot of water 3 or more liters per day, so I am well hydrated all the time. I do not exert myself in the sun, I'm just walking and standing around. Nausea happens also when the sun is setting, so the intensity of the sunshine does not matter considering my nausea.
I live in Finland so the humidity isn't high here, the temperature will at most be 30 degrees Celsius in middle of the summer, which only lasts for approximately 2 months.

Also I forgot to mention that during summers, I don't get headaches, just nausea, when as in winter it's the other way around.

And I noticed that my keyboard refused to type here:
"-- Returning back inside to dark will I drink a lot of water 3 or more liters per day, so I am well hydrated all the time. "

so here's what there SHOULD read:
"--Returning back inside to dark will cure it in 5 minutes. I drink a lot of water, 3 or more liters per day, so I am well hydrated all the time, so that's not the issue."

Sry~ ^^''

I like your suggestions, I've had this since I was a child and am now 47 and it's summertime and the heat-dread. I had the headaches most days after participating in sports all the time, that my family got me a USA Sleeping Team shirt. But it was the only way to get away from the pain. Exedrin wasn't on the market then. I love to golf and ride my motocycle so these headaches are quite a problem. Thank you for noting the temperature as being a factor. It is the same for me - since I could be exercizing in an air conditioned room and still get the headache.
Sometimes when I know I'm going out to be in the sun for any amount of time, I combine about 6-8 oz of Orange Juice and a Banana, and Advil Sinus (not like in a smoothie, just one after another). Then I hold the Exedrin and another pain killer from the friendly Migraine doctor called Toradol for when all that doesn't work. I don't have the vomitting, but have the headache and the neck pain. I'll try the sunglasses too - might as well, who knows it might help more than the juice and bananas! Thanks for all the suggestions, you never know which one will help someone. It's good to know there are at least 81 (when I posted this) other people with this problem.

I have the same problem with headaches and nausea after sun exposure. Still haven't managed to solve the problem completely, but I have found some things that help: Sunglasses make a big difference, and I've found that the polarized type help more because they reflect a lot of the light away from my eyes. Wearing a wide brimmed sun hat and white or light colored clothing to protect my skin also seems to help. I wear a high SPF sunscreen, which seems to at least lessen my immediate symptoms. Like someone else mentioned, I also try to find shade whenever I can't avoid being outside. Generally, when I have stayed in the shade even on very hot days, I haven't gotten the normal headaches and nausea symptoms. But again, I haven't solved the problem completely. I'll keep reading this thread to see if anyone comes up with other things that help.

Hello I to have a problem with sunlight and it isn't heat it could be the dead of winter and within minutes of being in sunlight i would have nausea, i do not have a problem with dehydration as i drink plenty of fluids all day. It could be summer time and i would be in a car at temperatures in the 90 plus range with no problem, but as soon as some skin starts getting sunlight it hits me i get flush and sick to stomach. I remove my skin from sunlight hide arms etc.. no change in heat and it goes away. I read on here it could be heat stroke etc.. but is that even possible when your cold or not dehydrated. I have looked all over the internet and can't seem to find anything out.

We share the exact same scenario. It can be sunny and -25 f and I suffer the same nausea and headache as on a 90 f day. I can protect my skin but I cant stop the nausea and headaches. Wish we could share more info.

Hi ALL! I see we all have basically similar symptoms. Perhaps we can fInd other shared patterns that may trigger this? Are any of us in front of a tv, cell, computer or other screen for a total of he's at a time? Ages? Occupations? Any family history? Inform one started getting these about 5yrs ago. Am often on cell and computer for work and at home for school. My mother claims he has never had a head chin her life and my dad has been in masonry for 25yrs. I'm a student and sample coordinator. Live in the city... Always wear sunglasses but coul drink more water. Let's give this a whirl no?

The headache due to 3-4 minutes of sun exposure can be attributed to stomach disorders as well. At least, this holds true in my case. I've had indigestion issues since last 15-20 years, and since then I have started to develop these complications. I have sweaty palms, even when air conditioning is on. Particularly when my stomach is upset and I have high acidity, my susceptibility to throbbing headache increases.

I have gotten sick from being in the sun as well, even when I don't do anything. I have looked around some and finding out how I can start making it so I can go out into the sun for longer periods of time.

I don't know if the things I found will help me or not, but I thought I would let people know what I am doing to see if it helps.

I found a site when I went looking into information about this problem. I had to think a bit about some of the symptoms that I have been having. One which led me to this page, which I got the idea about wearing SUN GLASSES (which I think helped me from not getting a headache when I went outside today).

Next I looked up information: Feels like my body is not absorbing water. Which I found some information. The information I found said that if you haven't drank a lot of water in a while (say you don't drink as much water in the winter) your body's organs get use to that amount of water that you take in. So it suggested that you should SIP SOME WATER through out the day:

Holistic Star says: "deeper dehydration, which is where the body has suffered dehydration over a longer period, and the organs have reset themselves to expect less water!"(http://www.stevepavlina.com/forums/health-fitness/24728-body-having-problems-absorbing-water.html)

So the things I have decided to try to do everyday (with in a month's time) is to:

1. Sip some water throughout the day.
2. Eat a little healthier.
3. Go outside where there is some shade (check time to see how long I can stay out there. Bring something to do since I don't know how long I will be out there). In and out of the shade until about the time before I get sick. (Take water with you, and make sure to drink some when you come back in). (For in your own yard if you are watering the lawn or something you can keep cool which should help with keeping the sun from effecting as fast).
4. Wear sun glasses when I go outside (may take an umbrella with me).

Also for some solutions to help people feel better (this is what I do):

1. Drink water (lots of it). (Or some other liquid, BUT NOT POP!!!! A pop can takes a cup and a half of water out of you, which will only make you more sick then you already are. If you are drinking pop for a headache don't drink all of it or make sure to drink lots of water with it!). Or SIP water or your drink.
2. Take a shower or bath (I think the body can absorb some water there).
3. Soak a Wash Cloth with Cold water and place on forehead. (Can use ice, but make sure that there is some sort of way that water is on your forehead. Like you can have a wash cloth with ice in it. If you are asking why, look at my comment above #2).
4. Eat something cold/cool (like ice cream, popsicle, etc.).
5. For headaches take pain killer with what you are drinking.
6. Good night sleep (if the solutions above don't help).

Good luck to everyone!! Hope some of the things I have suggested can help you in some sort of way!
