As we get older our biggest fear is losing control of our mental faculties due to dementia or Alzheimer's. If you are at risk for these conditions here are a few ways to promote healthy brain functioning:
1. Omega-3 oils- Research conducted by many scientists across the globe has concluded that the evidence is very strong to support a diet high in Omega-3 oils. In addtion to fish oils, people who consume walnut oil, canola oil and flaxseed oil have a 60% lower risk of developing dementia. It appears that these oils act as anti-inflamatories and improve blood flow for the body and brain.
2. Turmeric - This is a very popular spice in India. It contain curcumin which gives turmeric its yellow color. Research conducted shows that turmeric is a natural anti-inflamatory and reduces the buildup of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease.
3. DHA - backed by research, DHA demonstrates that people with the highest levels of the omega-3s have a 78% lower risk of developing Alzheimer's. The recommended dosage is 600 to 800 ml per day.
4. Vitamin B12 - Too little of this vitamin (or none) raises homocysteine levels in the brain, which will increase the risk for Alzheimers. A daily dosage of 500mcg will be good to include (sublingual is better)
