Hello EmpowHER Community!
My name is Doctor Norman Rosenthal, I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and attained my medical degree at Witwatersrand. After moving to the United States I was chief resident at Columbia Presbyterian and the New York Psychiatric Institute. I do love research and worked as a researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for 20 plus years. It was at the NIMH that I came to be affected by the seasons myself and began exploring the effects of sunlight on mood. This lead me to discover Seasonal Effective Disorder (SAD) and ultimately light therapy for its treatment.
More recently I wrote a book called, “Transcendence, Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation," which describes my experiencing of using meditation to help decrease stress and increase creativity. Transcendence turned out to be a New York Times best-seller and was a wonderful experience to write it and hear about all the positive experiences of others who had turned to meditation as a result of this book.
“The Gift of Adversity” is my latest book, which was released in late August 2013. The aim of this book was to illustrate my experience that there is a silver lining underlying all adversity. I did this through a series of short stories that I experienced in my lifetime.
I am happy to be exploring these topics and more with the EmpowHER community and would like to thank Dr. Pam Peeke and Michelle King Robson for having me on HER Radio.
Wishing you all Light and Transcendence,
Norm
