Jesse James, the now estranged husband of Sandra Bullock is in sex rehab. Tiger did it and the ex husband of Halle Berry admitted a sex addiction after he was caught cheating (it should be noted that he later confessed he was asked to do this for PR for Halle Barry and it was part of their separation agreement. He was never a sex addict, although he admitted that he did have an affair.) David Duhcovny also attended sex rehab and a slew of so- called C and D- Listers willingly discuss their gory details on the 'reality' show Sex Rehab.
Of course, these numbers are likely very low compared with us ordinary folk who enter sex rehab year round.
According to a Time Magazine article, "Sex addiction is marked not simply by poor decision-making in the face of temptation, but also by a sense of powerlessness before one's own compulsive behavior. There are many types of sex addicts, including so-called sexual anorexics who avoid physical intimacy with their partner and seek it out in fantasies or with others... Rob Weiss, founder and executive director of the Sexual Recovery Institute in Southern California, estimates that up to 5% of Americans deal with some form of sex addiction, though he says there is no real way to know. "

Rehab consists of many of the same steps as better known (and accepted) addictions like drugs and alcohol. Exploring denial, confronting addicts who insist that oral sex or sexual massages doesn't constitute cheating, holding addicts accountable, and providing compassion and support to ensure addicts remain sober in a healthy way are some of the tools used. Unlike alcohol or drug addicts, sex addicts are not expected to abstain from sex for life (much like food addicts.)
These addicts need to control a normal behavior, not eliminate it.
Sex rehab can last from weeks to months, to a lifetime. 90% of addicts are estimated to be men although reliable statistics are unavailable based on the newness of sex rehab and under reporting or false reporting.
There remain many people (lay people and medical professionals) who stand by their assertions that sex addiction does not exist.

What do you make of male celebrities heading to sex rehab when caught cheating? Are they simply dodging press and hiding while their PR people handle things or do you believe they are making an honest effort to rebuild their lives or relationships? Are you skeptical, since most attend rehab only when caught? Do you believe the 5% statistic?
Have you or someone you know attended sex rehab?

Susan - I happen to live in a state which has two of the most prominent treatment centers for sex addiction for celebrities and wealthy individuals. I have absolutely no doubt that there are ordinary people who have sexual dysfunction issues and need support which may sometimes include the need for intensive therapy and rehab. Ordinary people are more likely to only be able to get a limited number of visits with a trained counselor on an outpatient basis unless they can afford to pay out of pocket for more treatment. Somehow the high end luxurious resort-like centers that the celebrities go to, complete with spas and golf courses, just don't seem the same. They do provide a great public relations tool as they give the person a way to publicly acknowledge there's a problem and America loves to forgive people who admit mistakes or say they're sorry. What somehow is always missing from these sagas is acknowledgment of how much the female partner has been hurt or any public actions to try to mentor other men. The "boys will be boys" attitude, with a wink and a nod, just goes on and on and on and on, and the man's ability to earn an income from whatever he does (golf, basketball, acting, motorcycles) is preserved in the end and it's as if nothing ever happened. Maybe it's because nothing did. It's getting old.

Susan,
I was thinking the same thing when I heard about Jesse James' affairs. I have never heard of anyone attending sex rehab but I am certain it will be the next reality television show. Go figure. A person only has a PROBLEM after they are caught. Hum, is there a moral rehab?
