Aside from "New Year's Resolutions", a lot of talk about 2010 is that it'll be better than '09 - simply because it has to be. When you hit rock bottom, the only way is up, right?
Unemployment has to go down, we have to lose a few pounds, exercise a little more, work harder and relax more (slight paradox there but moving along...) and spend more time with family.
There have also been positives from this darkness. We're more grateful for what we do have, and don't care as much about what we don't. More time is spent at home instead of the malls or eating out and we've realized that living within our means really matters.
So if 2010 is to be a better and healthier year, how so?
Will you be a be better spouse, parent, friend? Will you listen more and talk less? Be more of a juror and hear both sides, rather than just a judge who pronounces sentencing?
Stay pretty healthy without beating yourself up about that delicious dinner you had of cheese, French baguette and wine (a fav of mine)?
Maybe you have something more specific in mind - like moving to a new place or town or something more daunting like ending a relationship you should have ended a long time ago. Or starting one!
Whatever is it, 2010 will probably not be business as usual for most of us because we've learned so much from 2009.
What do you expect from '10? What are your goals and how will you go about achieving them?

After two years that have included three job-related moves, my hope is to be settled! To enjoy a home for more than a year, to recapture a bit of the security our household felt when we both worked fulltime, and to reestablish routines that have been rocky with all the transition. I think that's what the recession has done most to us: to cause everything to be unsettled. I hope that 2010 brings a calm settling vibe with it as we all start to move our way through and out of this mess.
Thanks for the question, Susan. It made me think.
